Topic: Allotment has new tennant.

For several months I've had my suspicions that there was a new occupant living off the site rent free and today the I saw it. In the middle of the afternoon a muntjac deer wandered across the site without seeing me. When I get my faithful old camera back from the workshop there will be a real challenge to get a picture.

Does anyone know what their favorite food is likely to be and what crops if any are likely to be at risk?

They are very fond of brambles, primulas and heather; if you have young trees/shrubs protect them as they will strip the bark.

I've only ever encountered them on the margins of woodland, so can't comment on what they'd find attractive on an allotment.

I should add that our site has a spine of scrub oak through the centre with lots of hedgerow shrubs and brambles. Bordering the site is several acres of mature deciduous woodland nature reserve that leads onto the Welsh Harp reservoir and reserve so there is a lot of wilderness apart from many unkempt plots.

So long as rows of cabbage do not start vanishing overnight they have my permission to stay.

Eristic you're really lucky to have seen one as they are generally such shy creatures. It/they will almost certainly keep to the nearby woodland nature reserve that you mention and shouldn't cause any problems on the allotments.

sorry but there are munjac on our site they have damaged young trees, they have eaten broad bean plants, pumpkin leaves, strawberries,swetcorn plants munched in half , runner bean leaves and plants, radiccio in one mouthful! I have only seen the little blighter once but lots of folks complain about the damage they do
