JERSEY LILY (AMARYLLIS BELLADONA)
« on: October 09, 2004, 11:03:39 »
I bought one of these plants whilst on holiday in the channel islands earlier this year but have mislaid the care details.

I've had the plant outside until approx two weeks ago when I moved it to my unheated greenhouse for the winter.   It's been in general purpose compost since being planted.   The only water it's had is rainwater ( of which we've had plenty over here in Leicestershire).   I've not seen any sign of growth in the plant since I acquired it back in May.

Should I be treating the plant as a houseplant and move it indoors permanently or is it an outdoor plant that can go back outside in spring next year?

Any advice greatly received 'cos I don't want to lose this reminder of a very enjoyable holiday

My mum has a lot of amaryllises. She keeps them inside the whole year as I don't think they are hardy. They grow and flower in the winter. I don't really know much about them other than what I've seen at mum's!
gone to pot :D

Hi there CC,

Have a look at this web site and see if it's of any use to you.

Hope it helps.  :D

Eileen.

P.S.
I have various types of Amaryllis which are, as I write, still outside in pots in the garden and doing well. I don't really treat them any differently than any of my other bulbs except that I store them in the shed over winter. I live in Scotland which can be rather chilly, even in summer, but they're fine and are still in flower. I only take them in when the first frosts are forecast. However, in saying that I don't have any Belladonas.

I do not know which part of the country you are from but here down south whe just leave them in the ground. In fact I have just divided mine up and replanted the bulblets out in the border which is  facing southwesterly and slightly sheltered. Some of my older bulbs are very large and wiegh up to 5lbs I do not expect the samall ones to flower for a couple of years. But they are well worth the wait.
