Dandelions and Boiling Water

Was reading today that you can kill dandelions by pouring boiling water onto the crown of the plant, does anyone know if this is true? That got me to thinking, if it works for dandelions then what other weeds can be controlled using the same non-chemical method? Any ideas? I've been thinking of the prickly thistle-like weeds at my plot which grow in the lawn that borders the plots and between and from underneath the paving slabs that form the pathway at the back of the plot.

Grrr, hate that - just clicked post, and ccleaner had erased the cookie!
If boiling water doesn't kill it, it should weaken it. Dandelion leaves make a good foliar feed. YOu could also blanch them for use in salads!
Good luck!
