Will it survive??
« on: July 11, 2009, 21:54:35 »
Hi all,

earlier today one of the baby sparrows fell from the nest that's lodged in our cavity wall . It is now directly behind an air brick at the base of the wall.  It's been chirping loudly all afternoon, it eventually stopped about 10 minutes ago, presumably because it is now dark.

I don't know how wide the cavity is so I have no idea whether the parents will be able to make their way down to the base of the wall to continue feeding it.  And even if they do manage to keep it alive, how on earth will the poor little thing get out?

I fear the worst :(

If you fear the worst and it is looking that way, then I think you can do lttle harm by returning it to its nest.  You will not be 'contaminating' the others and I personally do not think that it is the as much as an issue as we are led to believe anyway

Hi redclanger - thanks for replying. I would love to return it to it's nest - but it has fallen inside the cavity wall!  My rambling above didn't make that clear.

It's still going strong this morning, so may be the parents are getting down inside the wall to feed it  ???

Having reread it this morning (sober) your meaning is clear so sorry that I misread it last night.  Good luck to the little fella.

I'm extremely sorry, greenscrump, but I fear the worst.

If it has fallen within the cavity wall, it has no way of flying off.  Birds cannot take-off vertically.

I stand at the kitchen window for hours watching the birds, and it's always ver sad when you lose one that you are unable to help.

Hi Val, I'm fairly certain that it made it  ;D

The chirping seemed to gradually get higher inside the wall - maybe the walls aren't too smooth in there so it had places to climb up ??? Any road up, within two or three days it sounded as if it was on the same level as the nest and chirping just as loudly as the other chicks. I can only think the parents managed to get down inside and feed it, so it worked out that it had to follow them back up. A day or so later, all chirping stopped, so think it must have fledged with the others.  ;D

Hi Greenscrump,

I am so glad your little bird made it. :D  Your cavity wall probably has wall ties...

which might explain how you heard him move up the wall.

Lovely news.

What a nice ending
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

As I said greenscrump, I really feared the worst, but I'm glad that your chick seems to have survived.

As a bird feeder, and the kitchen window is my 'window on the bird world', I find it extremely difficult when we lose a bird (chick).

Hi all,

the wall ties would definitely explain it - thanks for that Tulipa!

Me too Valmarg, I spend way too much time watching them, just gazing out of the windows. I get sooo upset if any of them disappear for any reason - OH thinks I'm a bit of a basket case!

Thanks as well for all the good vibes for the little chick  :D
