Plant ID number 1
« on: July 20, 2009, 12:21:05 »
I have 3 plants I would like to ID, but will put them in different threads to avoid confusion (on my part!)

Any idea what this is?
I will need to give it a severe pruning, so need the name so I can look at when/how it is best to do it!

Thanks!

Well don't worry about killing it when you prune it you can dig it up and it will still grow back.....that's what I did. Now I've got to try and get rid of it again without disrupting the more sensitive stuff I planted in it's place.

Yes I have been reading up, and it is considered an invasive pest in certain circles!

I guess its done it's flowering for the year so I may well give it a prune now.

Seems as though early Spring is the advised time though...

Definitely Hypericum.

However Pic 2 shows a single flower on a stalk - that would be Hypericum calycinum or Rose of Sharon. Pic 3 shows clusters of flowers on one stalk, that would be Hypericum "Hidcote".

If in doubt, you can't go wrong in pruning just after flowering. 95% of flowering plants fall into this.

Hypericum will sprout from old woody growth, so you can prune as hard as you like, but generally take about 6"-12" off to give it shape and keep it under control.

And in my case very small bits of root left behind!

Definitely a Hypericum, but as far as i know its not Hidcote. Hidcote is slightly more refined with smaller leaves and nmicer flowers. Dont know the name of this one i am afraid.

Agree on pruning too, just after flowering would be fine.
