If you are fair skinned as I am then the thought of getting sunburnt in this hot weather is one thing you worry about.
I as a child was rubbed over with malt vinegar to ease sun burn and prevent further burning when out in the bright sun.
Then my children came along, they got the same treatment as I did.
So long as there are no breaks in the skin or blisters, you can apply liberal amounts to the skin.
It is cheaper than sun creams and it maybe better in some cases. Don't quote me though.
All I know is that it worked for me and my kids, if you don't try then you don't know.
I get it that you end up smelling like a bag of chips for a while but I'd rather that than being burnt to a crisp.
I remember the time I went fishing all day and the car broke down on the way back. I got in about one in the morning and the missus was not impressed. But she had the last laugh when I asked her to put the vinegar on my back. It was like having ice cubes put on my back. Did the job though and I am thankful for that. 8) 8) 8)

not for sunburn, used it as a hairwash to 'bring out the colour in my dark hair', as mum used to say ;D
still smelled like a chip :o ;D

I always put some on my kids hair to get a good shine to their red hair and the nits were kept away.

landimad.....no! I've not used it, but you've brought back a Blast from the Past for me..

Must have been late 50s/v.early 60s? and a friend of my parents always used to buy bottles of olive oil/vinegar mix when they went to Spain.....bought it freshly mixed from the Chemist, too...

I always wondered if there is not enough of the old ways around nowadays.
The young are taught these things but never heed them until something goes wrong.
If more people listened to what was taught them instead of trying to sue each other then this world maybe a better place.

We always use citrus and olive oil when we go away. Gives you a lovely tan. Tony cleans the rabbits cages with vinegar and I clean jewellery. We also use it to clean the windows. Remember my aunt puttin it on her to sunbathe. I would have thought that being acidic it would burn the skin in the sunlight.

Used to use olive oil and vinegar as a tanning lotion as a teeny 50/60 's ,

-- not sure with the intense sun rays we have now if it's a good idea ?

Had to buy the olive oil from a chemist in those days, in a teeny bottle --

wonder what the continentals would have made of that !! All before air

travel was available to the masses.

Always give my car windscreen a wash in vinegar before an M O T ,

was fed up with being failed on faulty wipers --- was only grease that made them squeek !!

I would never use oils of any sort, due to having fair skin.
In today's climate there is no need for the oils. You are better off protecting than trying to tan. I would not recommend any form of tanning as the risk of skin cancer is to high.
If like me you work outside then it is best to cover or protect as best you can.

I put it on my lettuce instead of salad cream.
I like it, but not sure about others.

Malt vinegar mixed with a teaspoon of sugar and added to sliced cucumbers and tomatoes!!! HEAVEN!!

We have tall stalky weeds called Pokeweed easily taller than a man that have a long taproot impossible to dig out once they grow tall so I've tried cutting thru the stalk and applying a paste of salt and vinegar. They go into contortions eventually and slowly die unless they were huge and need a second application. I've tried this with mixed success on other pests growing too close to blueberries which I don't want to disturb.

I use vinegar in the washing machine, too. I live in a hard water area, but powdered water softeners have blocked my washing machine pipes in the past. Since I switched to adding a splash of white vinegar at the start of each wash, I haven't had to call out the repair-man for a gunged-up machine.

PS I find Tesco cheapest for white vinegar...

That's a new one on me now, washing machine softener and water softener mmmmmm
Now I wonder what else there is in every day life what vinegar is used for??????
