Topic: Any Idea what this Tool is Called?

Hi,

Any ideas recommendations would be appreciated.

As OB rightly said it is a cultivator.

The one in question is a three pronged cultivator.

The one I have takes up to 5 prongs and are 'cobra' headed.

There are many variations on the market as you will see if you do a 'google'

I have a big one like that also a hand version great bit of equiptment, I cannot think where I got it from could be lidle or audi or wilkinsons or poundstrecher. you would find them in garden centres, perhaps in focus or B+Q. Check again on Ebay perhaps so one is selling one close to where you live saves on postage?

Wolf Tools have 3 versions, all come in the form of a detachable head, with a choice of shorter (5ft) or longer (6ft) handles - a simple `click-on` attachment.  There is also a short (trowel length) handle for `hands and knees` use.

I use the smaller of the WOlf tools one as I find it useful as a weeder. I like WOlf tools generally, the heads are well made and stainless, though they are a bit more expensive than some others.... I also wish they did a Swoe...... My folks have given 20+ years of service adn I confidently expect mine to do so too....

I bought a hand tool in Germany for 1 euro - three prongs on one side, a sort of hacker/hoe thing on the other. I use it every day, best euro I ever spent.

Its called a cultivator, I bought one in 1958 from woolworths in Bargoed for 2s 6d and still use it on the plot

I've got one of these, found it in a shed on some land we bought, but haven't got the hang of using it. Seriously, how is it best used?

I mainly use the largest (5 tined) version.  I bang the tines down in to the ground at one end of the bed then walk alongside the length of the bed, towing the cultivator and pressing down on the shaft.  This effectively breaks up the soil to a depth of 3 - 4 inches, and drags out most forms of weeds.  This way I can break up the surface of a 30ft x 4ft bed in minutes, and it only then needs the loose weeds raking off.

The smaller versions can be used similarly to break up the soil and pull out weeds between the plants.

I'll try mine again tomorrow, thanks!  I mostly use a swoe but it sounds like this might go a bit deeper.

Three tined cultivator is the name of it and I find its great for the narrow rows of veggies to weed.
Just walk backwards and cultivate as you go and then job done.
Dad made me one 25 years ago and its still going strong, just a new handle and your away again.
