I spent a good hour tonight watering everything on the allotment including the sweet corn.  Dinner will be a bit late tonight as I have just cooked the rhubarb, made gooseberry jam and strawberry, raspberry and redcurrant jam, and shelled the peas, cut up 3 runner beans (first ones), and carrots, also put the sweet peas in vases, and then watched the tennis.  Think I may go to bed and have dinner tomorrow.  Think I will have to go to 'Allotments anonymous' soon.

watering plants on an allotment in summer

whats that all about!!

seriously though - we have no water where I am and all I have has been collected in my butts - they are now empty!

we have adapted our methods to encourage plants to find their own water

its a tough regime but i think its pretty authentic

of course if we had mains water i'd be plashing it all over

necessity is the mother of invention and all that jazz!

I've done something to my back, too much watering.  Sorry plants but you will have to do without tonight.

Temperature got to 37 degrees yesterday and is supposed to go above that today. The sweetcorn was just about the only one not wilting when I went in the evening - shame the earwigs have got to it!
Location: North East Spain - freezing cold winters, boiling hot summers with a bit of fog in between.

Have they done much damage yet? I'm fairly new to growing sweetcorn, so appreciate info on what I need to look out for

They have done a lot of damage, I picked one to check and half the sweetcorn on the cob had been eaten. So the crop is just about ruined but I'll continue letting them grow etc as the chickens enjoyed the remains. The tell tale sign was that the tassels had gone and were lying on the floor around the plants, opening up the cob a bit let the critters come out, about six earwigs in each. I realised that too late to do anything but will know for next year I guess - hope that helps and you don't suffer the same.

Well we managed over 30 degrees yesterday.  Not up to your standards but for UK pretty hot.

How frustrating to loose all your corn. Some of  mine is just starting to produce the central flower, when you spend weeks watching something grow it is so devastating to find something wrecked.  Was just about to sow all my corn when I came across RHS web site and on their advice divided into batches and sowed at intervals.  Lost second batch while on holiday but three batches so far doing well.

Have in past lost broad beans to earwigs.

I didn't get round to doing a 2nd sowing as I've lost the blummin packet  ::)  So I'm hoping the 1 and only batch I have does well !

Thanks for the responces. The Mexican native / import and flour points are interesting. A lot is grown in Chipias in the South where they are p*** poor and they do eat it -- lots. They get a deluge every so often so maybe they have cunning irrigation going on - these are people who build cities on lakes.  Anyway at the risk of sounding like New Labour Lib Dem Allotment Man., I shall compromise and give one block lots of water and the other one a light sprinkle and see if it makes any difference.
