What has happened? Firstly all the edges of the leaves started going brown, then what little fruit appeared had a silver colour bloom all over them. It's the first year I have planted a gooseberry bush and no idea how old it is.

Sounds like it has got too dry at the roots... Mildew? :-\

It will prevent it in future assuming that it survives now. I spray every 2 -3 weeks.

Thank you for the links Davholla, very informative. I have not long had a look at the gooseberry bush in question, and I was nicely surprised to find some new leave growing! I will still use a solution on it though, as a preventative measure.
