Pumpkins and squash- should I or shouldn't I?

Some of my pumpkins and squash have been in a coldframe for a couple of weeks and have grown so much I have had to leave the lid open so they should be hardy. It's hot and sunny but also quite breezy, so i'm dithering over whether to plant them out. What do you think? I really don't want to have to pot them on again!

Weather forecast rather cold on the eastern side of the country on Wednesday night.
Mine have been outside for several weeks, but I am still covering them every night with fleece and have them protected on all sides from the wind. Just off to the allotment to do it now. Can't bear to loose them when we have already become such good friends.

I put half mine out at the weekend. The ones I put out were the stronger looking bush types, the trailing ones don't seem to have such good root systems yet and seem a bit more fragile so they are still in pots on the patio.
know what you mean about potting on .....
Looking at where you are I'd put them out then fleece them

I have just planted mine ...but in retrospect I think maybe it would ,ve been wiser to have done it earlier in the day or wait till the evening . The sun is hot here now and stingiong ants were swarming over my hands and feet ...I stupidly watered them in and to rectify that had to cover them over with sheets of newspaper . They,ll be ok but I think better to wait till end of week as DebsP says, when it should be cooler .

My neighbour planted their butternuts a month ago, and and they look OK. My squash got fried in the greenhouse so I put them outside a few days ago, no hardening off. Half died and half are now showing signs of life. We are in the south though!

All my squash and pumpkins are now out. I think it is an ideal time now to get them all out while the weather is fine. Make sure they have the best start by seeing they have a good root system before you plant them. Plant them in a heavy manured ground and water them regularly. I think it is going to be a good year for them this year after last years wash out. busy_lizzie :)
