What people have advised about finding out both sides of the story is true & necessary but it still doesn't excuse a teacher calling a pupil a d!ckhead whether it was said in jest or not.  Teachers are there to try and set standards and teach children for the better but by making such a comment, the teacher has pretty much now made it acceptable for every person in that class to use the same word both in that room and elsewhere.  How is that ok?

Would you let your boss call you a d*ckhead or any other derogatory name in front of your colleagues?

If the person wants to keep the job then yes. The simple answer is if you do not like being called a dickhead then stop being a dickhead. The boss is the boss. Take it or quit. Are you a quitter?

No i'm not a quitter but i also don't put up with idiots who think they are being clever and big by calling other people names! case in point one of my previous employers  had me escorted out of the building because he didn't like me standing up for myself  ;)

If your boss was in the wrong, I hope you took it further.

I know it is wrong for a teacher to call a pupil by this name he could have used the correct term for how the pupil was behaving.

Sometimes teachers get things wrong but not always, just like in any other walk of life. It should not be teachers who have the biggest infuluence on how children are formed and how they behave. I ought to be parents that teach children right from wrong.

Only too often do I see the blame for childrens upbringing being blames on schools. the basics shgould be there from home. Teachers have to hit targets and high standards for academic work and get very stressed at times having to deal with behavioural problems. Maybe it was not that particular lad who created the problem, but, believe you me, it is hard to work out who is to blame at times.

I do feel that people who work in schools are unable to show a pupil the 'bottom line'. Parents have so much power over schools but schools have hardly any over parents behaviour.

A number of parents seem to coach their kids into challenging authority when the controlling of their child would be in everyones best interest.

I am not judging this particular incident as non of us can do that. We were not there, but neither was the Dad.

Try to look at situations from every angle and be open minded.

calm down

how you deal with this will have a dramitic effect on your child!

there needs to be a sense of scale here

have you verified the facts!

even if the teacher said it - i think he/she has been inappropriate at best

the youngster may be perfect but I will bet you £100 that you have called him worse than that - the principle - "in loco parentis" still applies.

you said that there has been a stabbing at the school - i think that teachers have a tough job and they are entitled to support and the active pariticipation.

I was working in one of the teaching laboratories in college which was kind of L shaped. I was at the corner of the L with doors at either end. A group of 6th formers (and their parents  :o) came in one of the doors  (it was open day), and a technician came in the other door. He shouted out at the top of his voice WHAT ARE YOU ******* DOING IN HERE YOU **** (he'd been getting bladdered in the bar). I was tempted to say MIND YOUR ******** LANGUAGE, JULIAN, YOU ****, WE'VE GOT ******** VISITORS! but I thought we'd had enough swearing for one day

don't suppose we saw any of them again

Does this all come back to the modern kids obsession with "respeck"? We didn't lose much, if any respect  for classmates when teachers clipped them round the ear or called them 'thicko' - mainly because we knew that sooner or later the teacher would get round to each of us (captain of form or not) since nobody's perfect.

Incidentally, while finding the swearing unacceptable, I find it hard to believe any pupil over the age of 8 can consider working a maths problem out aloud in class is acceptable behaviour (unless so instructed) and it would certainly require some reaction from the teacher.  What if the teacher had used the word 'thickhead' (perhaps he did) - is that unacceptable?  Just has to kowtow to a teenager instead of resigning?

Young people now know all of their rights and none of the responsibilities that go with them.

All this fuss over kids now sickens me.Most of us had happy childhoods and we did as we were told.

God help them when they get into the work place. :(

I asked my two grandsons one aged 14 and the other 15 what they would do if the teacher called them a dickhead and they both said that they will call him the same cos if he can say it then they can. I couldn't argue with them
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

A lot of children these days are not modelled the correct behaviours by their parents. The poor teachers are often driven to distraction by these kids, you know the sort they're the same ones down the allotments sites causing mindless acts of vandalism because they think it's funny. If my child came home with such a recount I would be as equally interested in what they had done to create such a response as to the alleged behaviour of the teacher. Talk of decking the teacher or sticking a pitchfork where the sun don't shine seem hypocritical IMHO.

When our girls were young we always said we would not be the sort of parents who if someone came knocking at the door complaining about one of them we would not say "Our child wouldn't do/say something like that" & we stuck to it. Luckily it didn't happen but one of them could be easily led & paid the price. I had a teacher phone me at work making accusations against her & discussing it with his wife but failed to tell his wife when it turned out she was not involved. The ones involved owned up when they saw the trouble she was in.

Can you imagine having a career that can be destroyed on the whim of a child. ???
