Egyptian Onions (Tree Onions - Walking Onions)
« on: May 11, 2009, 09:56:17 »
I have quite a few Egyptian Onion 'babies' surplus to requirements.
Last Autumn the crop of bulbils was the best I have ever had.

Plants are +/- 6 inches high and growing strongly

Not looking for any particular swaps, but always interested in 'unusual' or 'Heritage' Climbing French Beans and/or Runner Beans

Hi Mikey

Lost my Egyption onions when I moved house so would like a few if you have any left.

Have Daniel's Defiance.......runner with old fashoned taste

or

climbing french Coco Sophie

or

climbing french Tung

or

If you are really silly 2 seeds of the Giant Sword Bean (more famed in Japan)
They tell me this is the one from Jack and the Beanstalk as it gets really really big.
This 3 sided bean is extremely rare.....got mine from India.

If you have other ideas/requirements PM me and I will check as I have a few others.

Have restarted the tree onion thred.... only one of mine is doing the "Tree onion thing" but it seems to be doing it in spades... three of the bulbils on the first layer (and they're not completely unfurled yet) have got "caps" on them so I should have a t least one proper multi-layer one this year.... the others seem to be turning themselves into mighty onions (they're giving the Kelsaes next to them a race and I'm not used to that by this time of year) but aren't doing the tree onion thing...... will try to get soem photos up tomorrow...

It took till the third season for mine to really reach full size; they're waist high with massive clusters of bulbils. If you've got the same type as me, they're more properly known as Catawissa onions.

Chris,

sounds interesting ..........  you seem to have a different variety to mine, could I beg a few bulbils from you later in the season ?

Hi Mikey,

As long as at least one of the others makes a top this year then not a problem, otherwise I'll probably want all the first ones for myself for propagating stock here, through there might be a couple of spares....

Drop me a PM, I've got masses, and I'm pretty sure it's the same one. Does yours have the little clusters of secondary bulbils? If not I'd be glad of some.

Robert,

it was the 'mighty Onions giving Kelsae a race'  quote which fascinated me.
Although my crop are growing healthy and well from an original parent back 26 / 28 years ago  ;D  (yes ... we took them with us over three house moves ha! ha!) none of them have ever grown a main bulb any bigger than a good sized Shallot. They taste lovely, flavour more like Chives than big Onions.

If yours develop a large bulb, then yes I would like a couple to propagate for next season.

PS  I have never seen a flower on any of mine

Mine have never developed large bulbs either. I believe some other types have bigger ones, but I don't know how big. These seem to predate bulbing onions.
