Topic: Creosote - Substitute - Red Mites

Hi does anyone out there know whether the substitute stuff is as good at clearing out the red mites?

I don't think that I can buy proper creosote any longer so am thinking that this may be the alternative?

Pretty sure you can still get creosote. I saw it in the local agricultural merchants here in Otley, West Yorks.

I think it has....carcinogenic, y'know ::).....that's why I laid in a stock from my local little shop when I could 8)

We got some last year from a cattle market think its sold to farmers still but dont quote me?

Yes the substitute stuff does work against red mite.

as well as creositing the buildings, the other thing you can do for the chickens with red mite is put vaseline on their legs.

I have put some substitute stuff in the house and will keep my fingers crossed.  Not due to get ex bats for a week or two - so worst of smell should have finished by then!

Yes I am fairly sure that they will be safer now as the Council have blocked off the entrance to the car park right beside my girls run!

I am hoping to get them early April! 

My two girls at home are still doing very well and still laying between 1 and 2 a day!  Bless them - they are the most spoilt hens ever!

I am building a new hen house as I think my current one is infested and the warmer weather is bringing them back out.  I have tried sulphur candles, Jeyes fluid and other stuff but nothing seems to work brilliantly. 

I have managed to get 1 gallon of creosote, once mixed with a little oil and painted on - is it a permanent fix?

We have a steam cleaner that we blizt the shed with every few months, that kills everything and is safe :)

I *think* from memory creosote was banned sometime in 2003 in product sizes less than 20L , so you will probably only find it in merchant supplier type places.

You can still buy 20 litres of creosote; I think it's only the small quantities that are banned. Someone was selling it on eBay the other day. It's not environmentally friendly, but if all else fails it might be worth it.
