Hi, I just got some Jerusalem artichoke tubers from a friend at our site's seed swap. I know they get quite tall... is it better to plant them in a row or in a block?

How deep?

Plant the tubers a few inches deep about 18" apart in fertile soil. They do not require any pollination so they can be planted in blocks, rows, or one all by itself. What they do need is robust support as they can get over 17ft tall.

I grow mine in poor soil, I find it keeps them down to about 10'....  ;D

Crikey, they'll grow anywhere in anything if my plot is anything to go by, I have thousands of them and despite cutting down and digging up more are always appearing. I moved an old upturned bath this weekend and sure enough about 30 were growing underneath - a bit pale but still going strong! ::)

I agree they'll grow anywhere. The trick to getting rid of them is to give them time to come up, so you can see where every tuber is. Then put tender veg in once they're out.

treat them as a perennial.  Put them in where they can stay. A block is best so you can tie them together for support.

They don't have any diseases, and they don't spread, so they can stay in one place indefinitely.
