Tomatoes?
« on: April 30, 2009, 13:26:14 »
Have just seen the Met Office forecast for a decent summer.

I suppose I am well out of time to sow tomato seeds?

After the last 2 years of blighted whatever I have only put some GD in the greenhouse and was intending to keep them there.

 Shows what I know.

What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?

Not too late to sow some tomato seeds, mine were only sown a week ago and they are "up" already.

I have just found some tomato seeds that I got on a veg tasting at Garden
Organic, kept the seeds of the tomato I liked the best.

I think I will give them a try. I thought it was a bit late.

I bought some in homebase a fortnight ago for 99p each. The good thing was, they had around 10 different varieties to choose from. I would imagine they would still have some. Lidl normally sell tomato plants around this time of year as well. At least these plants would give you a 4-6 week headstart over any seeds you sow.

I started potting up some tomato seeds early this year. After a while, and none showing, i thought the seed was duff so set some more. This happened twice, so i tried a different variety. At the last count i now have about thirty two plants on the go, they all decided to grow :o Good job we like them ;D

I plant GD out doors. If you do not have enough plants take cuttings from the side shoots. (the ones you normally nip off and throw) They grow much quicker than from seed and will easily catch up.

Beg cuttings from others if you can.

Thank you for that reminder PH... I've done some selection packs for the sale but had lost the corner one in a couple to slugs... I'll take a cutting from another pack to replace it...  :)
