Is anyone else having to water -- or is it just me ?
« on: April 02, 2009, 17:54:19 »

Can't beleive that I had to give stuff a good soak today,  last years planting

of shrubs and trees were showing signs of  ''  no rain syndrom  '' ,  we had one

good downpour in March and that was it !!      ::)

How are the rest of you doing  ?

Certainly keeping me busy in the greenhouses. When I planted out the onion sets I had to water them in... and I don't think the carrots/parsnips will germinate until it does rain properly...  :-\

First thing we do when we get to the plot. Parsnips, carrots and beet thats under a cloche. We are on sandy soil so not a great deal of water retention.(Nice to dig though)
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

I have wet concrete with a dusting of dry soil over the top. Still impossible to dig.

Yep, we've watered several times.  The wind tends to dry the ground quickly

It's all a bit strange, not your usual wet Spring that brings forth May flowers, !

I have even given them a top dressing of feed, compost as well as a good soak !     :o

Will say they do look a lot perkier !

Watered onions, garlic, brassica, raspberries and fruit bushes on Wednesday evening. Assumed this would bring rain overnight but it's still a rain free zone.

It's been much the same weather pattern for several months now, and if it continues it's likely to give us another hot, dry summer.

I wassurprised how dry the soil was when I planted my first spuds last week. The wind had obviously had more effect than the rain.I didn't water my spuds after planting (didn't seem right!) but i'm wondering if I should have done.

I almost wish we were having to water, our soil is only just getting dry enough to work well. We are on soil that is normally welll drained but this year the rain has just gone on and on. They say a peck of dust in March is worth a kings ransome. This is true this year.We have only managed to get the mowers on the lawns once so far this year. >:(

Done a lot of watering around the plot, plus things growing under cloches and cold frame, over the past few days. Not able to get down there today or most of tomorrow, so am getting a bit worried.

Saw a so-called "bog garden" in Regents Park today that looked dried up, although hostas, gunnera and reums were beginning to poke their heads out of the soil.

Its funny this drought thing
But i had a look at my plant diary and we had a nine week drough from the begining of april through june which finished in mid july last year in northern Ireland. It really knocked things back.
Hope that this isnt the first fortnight of a new one!

I watered my strawberry bed on Saturday ~ it was dry as dust!! I have done the same with my beetroot and carrot sowings! My lettuce under the cloche was also dry.
We have rain on the way tomorrow and Wednesday!

March is notoriously dry... isn't there that quote from Chaucer about April showers piercing the drought of March to the root  :-\
