my mantis tiller has arrived
« on: March 07, 2009, 15:59:05 »
and I have assembled it.   What do and don'ts would any owners advise.   I have read the instructions and hope I have understood them.  Why does it say it is critical that you do not transport it in a car with petrol in the tank of the Tiller.  Is it for safety reasons or will it harm the Tiller? Has anyone used the edger on their lottie?   How good is it?   Thanks.

Hasn't done our Mantis any harm but it makes sense for safety reasons not leaving the petrol in it when in the car.

Hope you enjoy the Mantis they are great.

Thanks for your reply.   I only live 10 mins away from my allotment by car so will risk it.

Same here as it is a drag to empty it everytime you use it.

The thing is though I would drain it completely when you last use it and put it away for the winter.  Also remove the spark plug but think it will tell you that in the instruction booklet.

Thanks for your replies, especially about the spark plug.  I have made a note on the calender.

Yes.
Rubbish.

hmm, not enough detail there...

Really rubbish.

If you were trying to cut new edges it may well be usefull, but with existing ones, it didn't seem to work well enough. Plus if you hit and form of bump on your path and are at anything other than minimum so its barely turning then you take a nice slice across your grass.

I'll stick to my edging spade thing and the strimmer/edging shears  :)

give it a try, but have a go somewhere where a mistake won't be noticed :)

By all means drain the petrol out of the mantis before putting it away for the winter but as to the spark plug take it out and spray  inside with wd40 then screw the plug back in but do not tighten. when you are next going to use it uscrew the plug again spray inside again with wd 40 pull the cord a couple of times then screw in the spark plug tighten put in your petrol mix and away you go . I also give mine a good spray of wd40 al over the machine itself once a
month when it is not in use . also spray my spades fork etc.
