Pruning a New Tree
« on: February 24, 2009, 16:20:27 »
I too have just planted up a Stella Cherry tree and a Cox's apple in barrells.

Being new to fruit trees can someone tell me if I should do any pruning now, they are about 4ft high.

??? Thanking you for your help.

Happy Gardening Folks.

I think the rule is fruit with a stone is pruned during the summer, fruit with pips during the winter.

Scissor fingers are a twitching then?

You probably will never need to actually prune at all. Most trees give more than enough produce for the family, it is something commercial gardeners need to do for maximum results. An amateur can do more damage than good.

I always suggest that when the tree starts to develop, cut off the branches which are going to cause a nuisance, you will see what I mean as it grows. Shape it to suit your space.

So, leave well alone unless you know exactly what you are doing. You certainly will not go short of produce.

Trust me.

if it'sa grafted tree you will need to prune the apple, and now is a good time.
You couldn't make it up!
