Parsnip seed
« on: February 19, 2009, 09:02:22 »
I want to save my own parsnip seed but have dug them all up. Will it be ok to replant one now to flower and seed up or will I have to wait until the weather warms up. (It's ok we are trying to be more self sufficient where we can)
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

If you can dig the hole the soil is warm enough for parsnips! IE it isn't frozen solid. Parsnips will "revert" if cross pollinated... have you got a few roots of the same and can you net them...  ???

Don't forget to put a substantial stake in to hold it up. Parsnip will grow about 6 ft tall and produce nore than a pint of seed each.

Clever plant. It knows germination is a bit "hit and miss".  ;D

No wonder parsnip seed is so expensive the cost of a pint nowadays.
Tony.

Sow it, grow it, eat it.

I haven't done parsnips but most things that cross easily need several plants to get pollination...  :-\

That makes me wonder if one could buy a few parsnips, replant them, and have really fresh seed for the next season?

And didn't someone write somewhere in this forum that their parsnip flowered and scattered seed which germinated where it fell and they have been eating the results for months?
