MPs to vote to keep their expenses secret
« on: January 20, 2009, 14:52:38 »
Copied from another website:

While everyone has been distracted by the Heathrow runway, Gaza, and a plane landing in the Hudson River, the government have sneaked out a parliamentary order which will reverse the decision by the High Court last year that MPs expenses can be queried under the Freedom of Information Act.

MPs and the lords will vote on THURSDAY on whether to reject this measure. I expect I'm not the only one on here who thinks parliamentary transparency is important, so if anyone wants to help campaign against this, please:

1) Join the http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=50061011231 - easy to do, as a show of support. We should let them know that a lot of people don't like this.

2) Write to your MP. Use http://writetothem.com/, it's quickest.

3) Spread the word. We need to get as many people who care campaigning on this as possible.

4) Have a look at other things to do as suggested by http://www.mysociety.org/2009/01/17/6-days-to-stop-mps-concealing-their-expenses/

I've written to my MP, Gareth Thomas.  His record on parliamentary transparency isn't good, though, so I don't hold out much hope.

It looks as though the lobbying worked.  The proposal has been withdrawn.  :)
