Topic: transplanting onions

Its my first attempt at growing onions from seed this year, they are now ready to be transplanted on, could some kind soul out thereplease advice me on how deep do I have to plant them in the pots.  Is it just the roots you put into the compost ?  :-/

sorry, this is a sort of nothing reply as I have never potted on. I usually set them off in plastic plug trays and plant out from them.

But I guess you could bury the roots and a bit of the stem-I know those that grow for show pot on into quite large pots but that is specialist thing in it`s own right.

Ok. here goes with an answer. Do not be in too much of a hurry to transplant. I always wait until they are stood up straight and the little seed capsule has dropped off. Do not be tempted to remove it, the plants get nutrition from it. Next remember that any root you damage when transplanting will die and a new one has to be produce from the basal plate. Try to transplant so that the same amount of stem is below soil level in its new pot. Usually the basal plate is at or just below soil level. Any use? And now for the big guns to come in blazing eh?
