Yes in Roman Times and throughout the middle Ages London was walled. Hence the "Gate" names like Newgate. Have to be careful though as this far North "Gate" often means street... like Iron Gate and Saddlergate in Derby. I blame the Vikings... ;DOh yes and Aldgate (old)... Moorgate.... 8)
I think they had to build a wall round Norwich to keep Kett and his mob out.
