Where are you buying your potatoes this year?
« on: November 26, 2008, 10:55:52 »
Just thought I'd ask.......I'm think I'll go to the Ryton potato day for the majority, with a possible Alan Romans or Tuckers top up if I can't get all the varieties I want. Definitely NOT Thompson & Morgan after their slow delivery performance last year...... :-\

Anyone recommend/ have problems with any particular suppliers?
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

Oh yes!  :) :) :)

We go every year to Whitchurch (Hants on the A34). Next year it's on 24th/25th January.  We will definitely go on the Saturday morning this time, as some of the more popular varieties are sold out by the Sunday.

Is anyone interested in meeting up that day, say at lunchtime, at a nearby pub  ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

I will be buying all mine from my allotment shop as usual.  At £1.90 per bag for any of our 15 or so varieties that we sell - last years prices. :) :)

We also save money by not paying P+P to the big companies.  Only 2 varieties will cost £2.20.  We are a non profit shop and our prices are always much lower for potatoes and seed stuff.

I usually purchase from the allotment shop, problem is having to take a bag rather than a smaller quantity of number of varieties.  If I could only just plant want I really wanted and disregard the rest because I am sure it still works cheaper than buying tubers indivually! not managed to get to Ryton yet keep promising to.

From our local allotment shop, in early February ;D

They've got  8 early  - 5   2nd early  -  7  maincrop varieties

Priced at £1.90 per 3kg , but sold loose so you can buy only 1 kg if thats all you need
And no postage 8)

Fantastic value when compared to online prices :P

Suffolk Potato Day in Feb - bit of a scrum as well, but great for getting a small number of each variety.

Last year we used Pentland Javelin from Wilkies and Desiree. I ordered some Nadine from Marshalls cos Wilkies didn't have any. Guess what, After I'd ordered them Wilkies had them in. They all did very well but we are growing more Nadine instead of Desiree.
When I get old I don't want people thinking

Many thanks asbean for the link.  New about the Swindon day, but not about the one at Wantage.  As I work weekends Wantage it will be.   Have been to  Ryton before I changed jobs, a great day out.  If you can take paper bags with the variety written on, it saves time.
Would like advice as to which type of potato to grow for large jacket potatoes.
I like the ones that have a fluffy middle. (hope this makes sense)

Dobies...apparently found the order. Because they had Maris Bard and the strawberry plants I wanted.

I grew Maris bard when researching a biological control for blackleg.....I love the flavour but we grew them because they were very susceptible to the disease.....so might be a mistake...but i've never had black leg on my plot....touch wood.
