« on: November 24, 2008, 19:50:49 »
just rec'd next years seeds from kings (didn't realise just how many) and was supprised to find that they have sent the onion sets as well...can anyone suggest the best way to keep them ..I assume that they will have to be protected from frost but should they be kept cool or ambient,in  the dark or light  ??? in the netting or spread out???

I just hang them up (in the net bag) in a frost free area that never gets too warm.

I generally keep mine in the greenhouse or in a cupboard in the spare room until I am ready for them.

The key is to keep them relatively dry, when they get a moisture supply they want to sprout, which is understandable when you consider this is what happens when you plant them out.

I presume you ordered them from the seed scheme catalogue. Here's what Kings say on their webite about storing them till setting time .

"To store your Onions and Shallots until planting time they are best laid out in a seed tray in a cool dry postition."

As Kev says for white ones.. But I wait until April to plant out my red sets as they seem less prone to bolting (going to seed)  if planted then.
Cheers .. Jim
