Topic: Started building the allotment shed today

The shed was designed that both doors open to allow easy access.


We painted it green today, but i did not take a picture :( If i lived in it, would it be classed as a green house ;D

I originaly was going to build a pergular, but now i'm thinking of covering the 4x4 posts with chicken wire and growing climbing plants up them, so it will be 3-4 individual columns. I could still cover the top with something to make shading.

What do you think ???

I have a small grape vine that originaly was going to be used for grpwing over the pergular, but after reading up on grape growing, i found out that i would be better of growing them along a wire support system.

Maybe a few different jasmins or clematis as single columns. ::)

Hi Neil,

Where did you read that about vines being more suited to wire than pergolas? We've finally got our pergola up and planted the vines by it, but from what you've read, it sounds as if we ought to string wire underneath (or above!) the pergola so I'd like to find out more about this.

I'll try and find the link, but one of the places was a vineyard website.
It will still grow over the top but they recommend for the best crop, to grow along the wires and prune regular. I would rather grow something for the best crop rather than to look good.

Just found this thread Nilly and I must say that I am very jealous. What a great looking shed. ;) Mary and I only have a dalek compost bin to try and dart into to keep dry :( (Can u visualise 2 rather well proportioned older ladies trying to keep dry in a dalek. No room to breath!.We must get a shed sorted. Apparently there is a cheap on in Basildon QD for £86. Will need a close look in case it has a leaky roof or something for that money. One down at the local nursery this morning was £270 just delivered. Trust we shall all be invited to the grand opening. All the best.Jean :) :) :)

A lot of B&Q's were doing ex-display sheds for about £50, make sure you check what size shed you are allowed before buying.

My sister-in-law has a metal shed from Argos for £99, she just laid it on some patio slabs. It's ok for the money and quick to put up but the height is too low for me, i'm about 6'1" and can just about touch the ceiling in mine so have plenty of room to stand up and have stuff hanging above me. It will be ideal when it's time to dig up the onions and garlic. The metal one might be ok for you if you are only allowed a 6'x4' shed and not as tall/fussy as me ;D

Re vines - a few people have them on our site and the person with the biggest lushest one is growing it on a large pergola attached to their shed. It had tons of grapes on it this year, and looks beautiful.
