Whitefly...how do I get them off?
« on: November 18, 2008, 18:40:01 »
Can anyone tell me how I get whitefly off my greens.  The problem is when I pick my kale and cavalo nero, because the leaves have lots of hiding places for these pesky little critters, I have trouble washing them off.  I must have eaten hundreds that I have missed.  Is there something I can put in the water and soak the greens in to kill the little blighters?

   You can get some sticky cards [ most nurseries - though found mine in a local cheapo shop ]

    that you can put on sticks in the ground -  to catch them when you move the leaves ?

    One chap I know used to take the vacuum into the green house - get them all flying and suck
     them up !

    The things we do ? !!      ::)

LoobyLoo, do you mean to rid them on the plot or in cooking? If it's cooking then I do the same as Manics-soak them in salty water. What are left are cooked to death anyhow so I reckon they don't count. ;D I think it's been a very bad year for whitefly this year. Nothing seems to have killed mine off.
Smile, it confuses people.

Emaggie - it's when I'm cooking them that I have problems.  I'm no vegetarian but I'm getting fed up with eating bugs.  Dinner time is like a bush-tucker trial some nights!

Thanks for all the advice.  I'll try all of them and see how I fare.
