solar lighting for shed
« on: November 15, 2008, 21:05:10 »
I am thinking about getting a solar light for the inside of the shed on the plot. Don't want to spend a fortune. The shed is only 6x4. Anyone have any recommendations?

I have seen the following one:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/IOS-Direct-ACC1-Solar-Light/dp/B000MSSDRW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=outdoors&qid=1226782930&sr=1-4

The fella on the next plot to me has rigged up an automatic watering system with his solar panels.

It seems to work quite well!!

I saw a very similar thing in Poundstretcher for about a tenner. Was thinking of getting one for our lean-to. I wonder how efficient they would be in a British winter, though?

Done summat a bit more involved for mine, got an old but usable car battery (free), two solar panel trickle chargers (£10 each Maplins), a 300w invertor (£20, i think, Maplins), several (9 exactly, but only used 3 so far of each) low energy bulbs (9w and 11w, 50p each Netto) and ceiling roses (£1, i think, B&Q) and rigged them up together. In the depths of winter I get a couple of hours of light from them, the rest of the year there's more than enough and sufficient left over for a bench grinder.
If it gets too flat it's up home with the battery and a couple of hours charge.

To be fair I would prefer a bigger solar panel, which would allow all 9 bulbs but it just about suffices for me. The shed/garage is about 20x25ft, and 3 bulbs gives a good workable light.

I would imagine that this is much brighter than the shop bought solar lights.
I hoe, I hoe, then off to work I go.

Not yet Star, it is on my xmas wish list  ;D I think we will go for a basic solar light for the shed as it is only small. We are going to try the 'build your own' idea for the greenhouse though as it is much bigger. Thanks for the advice everyone.
