Blueberry
« on: November 13, 2008, 18:49:31 »
Hello everyone.
I am a new boy to this site and have just taken over a small allotment in Rotherham S Yorks.
I would like to try growing some blueberries, does any one have any spare cuttings or seed?
If you have please let me know what you would like in exchange.
Any advise on suitable varieties for the area would be most welcome.

I'd suggest trying your local cheap shops as many of them have had soft fruit in stock recently and may well have some left - Lidl's, Aldi, Netto, Woolies, Wilkos, Poundshop/stretcher, 99p shop.

Blueberries need an acid soil (ericaceous compost) so if your soil's alkaline you may be better off growing them in pots. And it's best to grow at least two different varieties to help pollination. I'd have gladly taken some cuttings for you but it's the wrong time of year.

If you can't find any at the moment, keep your eyes peeled for new stock coming in from as early as late January onwards - shops need to fill the space after Christmas! Good luck with your search.
Lesson for life:
