Worlds most expensive Tomatoes !!
« on: November 04, 2008, 22:04:54 »
Well, now that my toms have all finished I have had to resort to buying some from our local shop. :'( :'(

Have a look at the price of 'em though  :o :o

Should have been £1.99 for 7-8 very small ones that don't even weigh half a pound with all the pack and stalks. :o :o

At that rate a single one of my tom plants this year would have had about £50 worth of fruit on it !!

Rip off Britain !! (I only paid 38p though and thought that was dear   :P )

Roll on next years growing season  so I don't have to pay a bomb for rubbish. ::) ::)

They've been very pricey here even during the summer!  It makes me sorry I didn't weigh all our tomatoes and tally how much we saved from our small patch.

at £3.50 .5 basically come down to fact that least £1.50 is petrol cost over whole season.
another £1.00 taxes,£.75 other growing costs and labor   at end day farmer gets to keep .25 for him self if he is lucky.
there is book by a guy in the usa  he calculated that each home grown tomato cost him $64.
( £40.20 )each

I think your guy should've bought a more efficient tractor, TGG!!

In this particular case, he has to pay 2 Polish guys £5 an hour and supply a van to drive an 80 mile round trip. Plus ferry crossing from the Isle of Wight which I think is pretty cheap for season ticket holders? The day itself costs £100. Obviously there's growing & harvesting costs too, but...

say he sells 400 punnets, that's £1,400 minus £100, £1,300 should just about pay for the growing!

I don't know where you get the tax figure from? There's no VAT on "essential" food and you pay tax on your profit, not your takings.

So I think this particular farmer is doing rather well if he does one of these a week. Plus he's got his garlic which he earns a fortune from.

Like Campari F1, Aranca F1 is a 'heated greenhouse' variety - so I expect there are heating costs as well

He can claim back the VAT on what he spends...

What annoys me is the Save label - which was printed on before the pack hit the shelves. Never was at the higher price?
