« on: November 02, 2008, 05:20:26 »
Just found this site.  Thought some may find it a useful to growing different veg. Both newbies and more experienced gardeners.

More specifically an expert on growing brussel sprouts:

One minor thought - our Brussel Tops come in well before we are picking Sprouts, & I often wonder if I'm doing harm by cutting them!

From my experience this year Tim, just the opposite.

I have to net everything against birds. But the Brussels grew through the netting and the birds ate the tops clean off! Result? The earliest good crop of sprouts ever! Presumably, with the tops gone the plants had concentrated their energies into producing sprouts.

OK by me - I hate sprout tops, and my sister-in-law was over from Australia, so we were able to have several decent meals of sprouts, which she loves. I might do it deliberately next year.

Sorry to high-jack the thread kt: I like the web-site. It looks very thorough.

I can never bring myself to cut the tops off, which may be why we never get good sprouts. As they are looking better than ever I may cut some to see... but we don't need any more "cabbage" at the moment...  :-\

My lottie neighbour took off the tops of my brussels sprouts, when I was at home with a slipped disc (He's an old hand and helps me out all the time with advice or action).
And lo and behold: the nicest sprouts I ever had!

You've removed the apical dominance...looks like a good idea. Removal of the apex encourages the axial buds (in this case sprouts) to grow more.
