Hi
I always use shredding paper on my compost bay and I use it to put at the bottom of the  runner  beans trench. It is so good and so cheap to use.

this topic has broadened my uses for shredded paper, i have only ever used it in the compost heap in layers with grass clippings when i have mowed the lawn. but this year i want to dig some bean trenches for the greedier crops and so will follow on with the advice of adding it to the trenches for nutrients and moisture retention.

I used it as a mulch for my strawberries this year. Did it at the start of the season then replaced it mid-season with some fresh. Worked a treat.

I did wonder about putting it on the raised beds outside, but I am a bit worried that the wind would spread it every where.

cj :)

I'm thinking the same thing, I live near the sea and garden on an exposed site so can imagine all my neighbours plots covered with my shredded paper  :-[ :-[ :-[ - but I guess you will either have to water it and or weigh it down.
But as thifasmom said it's broadend my ideas too - like the idea of using it in the spud beds.
Thanks

Thanks Amazin, I had wondered about this, and shall use it in future.

Thanks again

just be careful not to put much shredded paper in the compost or it will slow composting process.

I see I am already too late to answer.

We can not get enough of it for all sorts of things from bon fire starting, using instead of straw for the strawberries etc, mixed with grass cuttings for mulching, it can even be buried straight into a shallow ditch to rot down in the ground. Adding to compost. It is all vegetable matter and inks/dyes and such are all supposed to be biodegradable these days.

In fact, I am wondering if I go round and steal from those bags put out for waste paper collection I would be breaking some law and I feel certain I probably will be.

I am just amazed Jim did not know it's value.

We get so much junk mail that I now sort it. That with names and addresses is put in a sack for shredding or burning. That with no name or to the householder gets recycled in to the nearest PO pillarbox, perhaps they will get the message that we don't want it.

Crushed egg shells certainly help with slugs and are a form of bone meal, I've always been lead to believe...
Ace rhubarb chunks - clubroot...werks for me...... ;)
Shredded paper as said above, in compost, bean trenches under tatties ect...
a great supply of humous on the plot and helps retain water...
Have a good season one and all.... ;)

Lol, I bet all that happens is they tip the post bags into the sorting machine and some other poor sod recieves the junk mail.

No joke  Here

I once worked for a company who used to send Junk mail out.

They had tons of it returned.

If they were busy, it all went in the bin.

If they were not busy, they would get staff to process it as 'remove from mailing'

That meant that any returned mail got taken off the mailing list.

Sadly the GPO would wrongly send that company mail, meant for another address.

 Usually it got dumped.
