Funnily enough you should ask this.  I read an article in one of my lottie books two days ago.  It said to place shredded paper around the base of brassica plants.  When they get watered,  it prevents the water evaporating as quick by being absorbed in the paper and the paper retaining the moisture in the ground.  Never used it for brassicas myself.      You could also put some in your compost bin,  use it as a pet bedding for certain animals.

When I dig the potato trench,  I line the bottom with shredded paper then cover with manure before sitting the spuds on it,  then backfill with the soil to make the mound.   The paper acts as a sponge and retains the water and moisture so they need less watering.  Some people also use it as a mulch in certain areas such as in the greenhouse.

All you do and all you see is all your life will ever be

Always use it Jim in the 'Darleks'. In between layers of grass or plant leaves. Saves turning the compost, always smells sweet (unless I've piddled in it!)

I use it in small quantities in my wormery as well as compost heaps. It seems to rot down very well and stops grass etc. from compacting and getting smelly. Also put newspaper (not shredded) in the bottom of my bean trenches to retain moisture.

we compost lots, use it for chicken bedding and earth up the spuds with grass clippings on top, after the soil has reached a point we couldn't get any more on  ;D

This is more a question than a suggestion, but if you've got a lot of the stuff, would it be useful as a mulch for strawberries, as opposed to straw?

Slugs do not like egg shells, but they would not help a lot if they were in the planting hole. I used to put rhubarb cubes in the planting holes of brassicas as I was told it helped keep clubroot away. I seemed to have more success than the neighbouring plots.

I use it to mulch around plants in the greenhouse.

At the end of the season, it goes in the compost.

I did wonder about putting it on the raised beds outside, but I am a bit worried that the wind would spread it every where.

I use shredded paper in my compost bin, the worms seemed to like it!  Put it in about 3 months ago and not a trace left.  :)

Ive been using the Rhubarb trick for the last two seasons and i must say it does seem to help, not as a cure but my brassicas seem less affected by it.

On really cold days i stuff shredded papper down me wellies as i cannot be doing with cold feet. :)

My worms in the wormery like it, and it calms the fruit flies down.  Also use it in the compost.
