This is exactly the sort of food I would not touch with a barge pole.

It is probably very very nice..........BUT.....it looks disgusting and me being such a wimp( ;D).....i wouldnt dare try it!

Sainsburys don't sell the soft roes at the fish counter any more - they say that it is not ecologically viable as they are imported ffrom Canada.  So we have to make do with the tiny tins of their own brand or John West.

Another example of choice taken away at the whim of the supermarket mafia.   >:( >:( >:( >:(

Send the photos with a polite letter expressing your disappointment to the manufacturer/suppler. Ensuring that you quote any distinguishing codes from the tin of label. Don't forget your name and address address.

You should get an apology as well as a coupon or two, even a parcel of goodies.

In fact you can probably do it by e-mail.

Customer satisfaction is paramount to out suppliers.

I love them too never from a tin always from fishmonger but those look most disappointing

Doesn't look like Brains.......I used to eat sheep brains when I was a child...and sweetbreads. Knowing what i know now i wouldn't touch them with a barge pole...they were delicious though!

I have never eaten those though.....does it taste like cavier ?

When we were in Murmansk in '41, we had plates full of it. How we suffered. But there was a war on!!

  Something is happening to John West tinned products,  we treated ourselves to a tin of crab meat -
  not cheap !

  It was dry and tasteless ,  looked like white sawdust - no, didn't complain but might do now !

Yep fresh ones from the local market are best. I love them on toast. OH would only eat the Cod hard roe, I'm easy don't mind which. I won't bother to buy any tinned roe after seeing your pic Tim.

Do agree. If only we were near a Fishmonger!

The tinned ones used to be acceptable.

Tim We do have an out of town Tescos which has a reasonable fish counter but the best roe that I have ever bought is from a fish stall just down the road on our local market (Wednesday and Saturday). You have made me wish it is available now but I think it is a bit early in the year (?) Can you freeze it? Daughter Lorna loves the hard roe and nags me to get some as she has to work.

Can't see it freezing acceptably.

Our fishmonger sells frozen ones and to be honest they are very acceptable, always has them in stock so if you ever visit Leamington spa stock up  :D

I know where you are coming from Fork, but I would recommend you overcome your doubts,  Soft herring roes are delicious, but would agree with other posters, best bought fresh from your local fishmonger.
