Topic: chicken egg question

bit boring and non lottie related,but someone here will know the answer...how long do farm eggs last for?i mean the buy at the side of the road,non pasturised kind,thanks in advance

Fresh laid eggs last 5 weeks from the day laid provided they are in a cool climate within 24 hours (ie.  refrigerated).  That is what it says in my book on 'Raising Chickens' anyway.

I find that a fresh egg lasts a week at the most in my house... less if I'm working from home!


Edited to say - it's 'cos I eat them...

thank you oh wise ones...OH,bless him,doesnt understand about em being fresh,he said why not try one and see what it tastes like...think ill be binning these 12 day old  ones before he gets in!

12 days? They'll be fine!!! Still fresher than supermarket ones...

thanks ollie,i did just do the float em in water test,and they all sank,so was in a dilema then!

Good grief - I regularly used eggs (shop eggs) that were a month out of date.  So in fact probably 2 months or more old!  Nowadays none of mine are any older than a week but even so - sometimes it is an advantage to have an older egg as in hard boiled - they cook better and are more easily shelled!

In the (very) old days the old lady that we lived with used to keep some over winter in a pot in the larder which had some substance (which you can still buy today) to preserve them for up to a year!

I never regridgerate my eggs now though and have them on the worktop.

Was it isinglass? My grandmother stored eggs in a bucket of isinglass in the late 40s and 50s so that they would last longer. I remember watching her.

Yes Artichoke you are right!

They still sell the stuff - although I would think that life is too short to store eggs nowadays!
