I assume that one does not use it when planting eg Brassica at this time?

Unless the soil is really poor its best to grow autumn/winter crops a bit on the lean side - they withstand frost a little better that way.

I think it a case of everyone to there own.  I do, i put a circle of Growmore around the stem of the plant and let it weather in.

Avoid any high nitrogen fertilisers like Urea though as they will create soft lush leaves that are susceptible to frost damage..  :-X

feed the soil, not the plant, and you shouldn't have many problems! ;)

I am with Davey on this . I use a slow release fertiliser like Growmore or Blood fish and bone sprinkled around the plant..
