Hi
I am involved in planning an allotment site. The land is approx one acre. Approx how many standard plots (about 250 sq metres) are usually on this size of land?

Also what is the standard width of a path (must be DDA compliant)

the rule for paths on our site is that they must be at least 2 feet wide

I take it you managed to get the site cleared - well done! Did you have your BBQ?

Paths between plots on our site must be an absolute minimum of 18" wide.

If you want to be DDA compliant, here's some info:

Route wide enough for wheelchair access – minimum 1000mm width

Gradients:
• Ramps/Paths 2m or less can have a gradient of (1in12).
• Ramps/Paths 2m – 5m, gradient of (1in15).
• Ramps/Paths 5m or more, gradient of (1in20).
• Car Parking Spaces, gradient (1in50 )max.

When planning your sire bear in mind that the plots normally include the paths. Also if you have a drive-in facility adequate space will be needed to turn about unless you provide in and out gates.

Amazin, the site hasn't been cleared yet but I am working on a business plan for the site-this must be completed before the council will hand over the land to the community. We are going to apply for a good wadge of Big Lottery Changing Spaces Local Food Grant to have it developed. Its amazing how the costs of starting a site can vary- can be done on a shoestring with lots of love sweat and labour or the full hit of a landscape architect, tarmaced area, fencing and kerbs etc. Looking at the site I think it will take about 20 x 100sq metre plots.Its in a very deprived area so it should improve the general environment and well being of the community - a great asset.
