ollie reading and understanding are not same thing.
I can read both Shakespeare and Chaucer, that does not mean I can comprehend what they are  trying to say.

there is no other sign post in picture.
as for there being an accident, removal of damaged sign and masonry  or vandalism.
It is very common to see sign posts like the one in the picture.

The thread started to drift when several other posters start attacking me.

I think the guy hasn't fixed his fence and his neighbour has waited a long time.....then in the middle of the night or while he was on holiday the neighbour erected this very short section of fence to show the other guy up and amuse everybody else.

Or the guy builds fences and this is an advertisement for his fence building.

Remember the "ignore" button guys! You'll pursue this until you get yourselves expelled and the rest of us won't have any friends anymore.

No need for fantasy. It's obviously just a back rest for very tall people who like to sit on the wall. You can tell they are big people because the coping has broken off under the strain of repeated sittings.

TGG  - assume you meant 'that doesn't' not 'that does' ?

i Theres two posts in the picture - with a bit of modified lapped fencing between them.

ii Do you mean because there no other sign post in the picture, these have to be sign posts, ie its not possible that theres posts elswhere

iii "as for there being an accident, removal of damaged sign and masonry  or vandalism" - yes thats my theory why did you mention it ?

iiii i think were assuming to much that this is in a park, for instance it could be in the front parking area of a genital enlargement clinic, could it not ?

iiiii I'm still fail to see how anyone would actually attach a sign to the posts - unless a large hose clip type device was used.

iiiiiii Surley the sign would be obstructed from view by the tree ?

Your thoughts ?

Barnowl - slighty tongue in cheek, but theoretically another possible method for the coping coming off the wall would be a member of the public coming out of the clinic and sitting on the wall.

I think the fence was either put up by someone learning the fencing trade as a practice piece OR someone with a sense of fun to make a talking point.  Why did they do it?  Because they could.  Perhaps they'd like a trellis on the top.

I like it  :D :D :D :D :D :D

keef this would do the trick no hooks required
http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=9254523&fh_view_size=6&fh_start_index=24&fh_location=%2f%2fcatalog01%2fen_GB&fh_search=adhesise&fh_eds=%C3%9F&fh_refview=search&ts=1219864062666&isSearch=true

Do you mean they were going to stick somthing to the lapped fencing area ?

If so why bother using a lapped fencing for the entire height - surely only installing lapped fencing for top half would have sufficced ? I mean it just looks like a half finished fence doesn't it.

I'm sure theres rule and regulations on the construction for signage within public area's - sadly i dont have time to look, maybe you do? - but I'm sure a sign of the construction and design you seem to be suggesting would not be allowed. Unless the signage is within the private sector of course.

Also if they had of stuck a sign to it it would be difficult to paint the lapped fencing area with a wood preservative. This would need to be done a few times over the life time of the construction.

No - in my opinion the construction was mearly the start of a much larger project to replace the somewhat dilapidated wall. However the project became shelved due to lack of funds, or maybe the constructor just gave up.

Asbean - modern art maybe, never thought of that option. If it is i can see what there trying to express. It envokes feeling of a society that feels fenced in, enclosed in a modern society of speed cameras, strict rigid regulations and slotted together lapped fencing. Where as in actual fact the dilapidated wall and the gaps round the edges show its easy to circumvent the establishment due to the decay and blinding errors which they fail to see. Of course if it is in front of a genital enlargement clinic the meaning could be quite, quite different.

And no, he doesn't sick up the bones on the carpet - he eats them (carp is his favourite meal, especially the large ones) but the scales are difficult to get off the parquet floor when they've dried.  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
