How much?
« on: August 16, 2008, 13:50:54 »
What size feeder and watering container do I need for 4 chickens?  I can't seem to find anything that tells me how much they actually drink and eat so I haven't a clue.

Getting them on 6th Sept and trying to get organised. :)
Thanks

kt.

Different breeds eat and drink different quantities.  I feed my 11 hens 3x "sandcastle" seaside buckets of hen food daily.  They also get greens from the plot that we won't or can't eat as well as scraps of bread etc.  They have 5 water containers each holding up to 1 litre.  In winter this is adequate.  In summer the hens drink up to 10 litres daily.

I did read once they need 2oz of pellets/mash per bird.
My one run 7 hens have a 2ltr scoop of pellets and a 6ltr of water in one container.
The water is changed morn and afternoon ( open container) they wash their feet in it? think it helps to cool them down. They dont do it in the winter.
Like KT mine have leftovers and greens from lottie etc in the afternoon.

I use an oblong washing up bowl set into house bricks to hold it secure. Its easy to keep clean and cheap to replace. I fill it each day buy it has never been empty so I assume they have enough. I have 25 bantams.
