We had a tree ...
« on: July 31, 2008, 00:54:07 »
Until last August we had a conifer which was taller than the house, the cats loved it, they climbed to the top, we could keep three daleks behind it, plus the wheelbarrow, it hid us from the neighbours BUT it completely blocked the sun from the living room, especially in the winter, so it had to go.

So we got a friendly tree surgeon who took two hours to cut it down to 7-8 feet; it took two days to remove the debris

We lived with this "tall stump" for the winter, just in case we wanted to grow something up it, honeysuckle or roses etc.

But decided the stump had to go too.  My goodness, that was a mess.

So we were left with the stump, lots of roots and dry compacted soil. My son worked his socks off all summer, chopping, hacking and sawing at the roots and gradually filling in the bits and sowing with grass seed. It took a while to take shape. This is what it looked like at the beginning of this month.

And this is what it looked like this morning:

What a difference! Looks lovely.........so bright and airy ;).

A job really well done, I hope your son enjoys the garden as much as you do :D
I was born with nothing and have most of it left.

We all enjoy the garden now, it's amazing how much bigger it seems with most of the tree area grassed over. We're having a big family party (12 + a baby) on Sunday, so weather permitting we'll be able to appreciate it for the first time.

My son loves gardening and we've run out of space at the house, so he's going to grow flowers at the allotment as well.  Good for attracting the bees  :) :) :) :)

I bet you wish you'd done it long ago; it looks really lovely now and it looks like there will always be something new to look at.

What a success story!

What a job! All looks ship shape and pretty. It is amazing how one tree can take over bit by bit sort of like the camel into the tent.
Is that a fig tree in the pot with figs??
