Topic: Battery hens need home

Hi all,

I have very little information at the moment but it a friend of mine
has asked me about finding homes for battery hens due to be "culled"
 on 29th July. These are probably in Norfolk.

I will post more information when I have it.

Hi all,

Chickens will be collected from the farm at one pound each by a friend of mine.
The farmer will not have anyone else on his property. So chickens will be delivered around Norfolk and I think the farm is in the London area so probably  anywhere between the farm and Norfolk. If anyone is thinking about having them they will need a suitable home and if arrangements don`t seem satisfactory my friend will not leave the chickens.

a work colleague mentioned this to me today, she said the farm was near Thorpe Marriott on the Reepham Road and the chooks are about 15 months old. I was going to put a sign up on our allotment gate to see if anyone could help out. don't know how many chooks there are though...

In a hurried conversatoin at work I got the impression the chickens were in East London. The friend involved has family in that area. Yes she will deliver as the farmer won`t have people on his property.

Although Thorpe Marriott is much closer and more birds can be collected if that is the case.

Is it correct that you should have at least two hens because they need the company?

I would imagine so, a flock sounds about right, but I don`t know about hens.
I don`t intend to keep any as I couldn`t provide properly for them.
There are many experienced people here and a wealth of knowledge in old threads.

Hi all - Please think of the chickens welfare first.  If they are coming from Norfolk - London or where-ever they should not also have to put up with a long follow on journey to wherever you are!

There are a lot of ex battery hens getting a new life now - a lot of people wanting them too.  But please be aware that a long drive is very stressful for these poor birds and possibly if there are people local to the farm - or even someone offering to put them up until they can be properly rehomed - but if you go at it half thingy - (so to speak!) the birds may end up suffering undue stress.

I have one living alone in my garden - due only to her having an accident and having to be separated from the flock.  She considers that my to dogs and myself are her family now - she seems comfortable on her own and enjoys life and gives me an egg every day!

Also be aware - I bought some egg boxes from a lady off ebay and out of her 50 chicken flock she has only 15 left - they are being stolen from her and she is desperate and hopes that the exbats that she had have gone to a good home.

All these birds will be having a rest period in my friends huge garden. I have every confidence in her ability to put the chickens welfare above everything else.

I am surprised by the number of battery hens being rescued in various parts of the country and of course people should find hens local to their area and prepare coops and everything they need in advance as well as researching their care needs.
