Anyone know what this is, please?
Pretty thing - but if it's a weed that's going to take over - it's coming out!

Looks a bit like a variety of scabious. Some grow it as a perrenial.

Thank you both - it just 'arrived' and looked so unusual I thought I'd let it flower before disposing of it! Will wait for some other suggestions! xxx

it does look a lot like salsify. Very pretty. Flowers usually close in the middle of the day (Jack Go To Bed At Noon), and the seedheads are like enormous dandelions, and of course the roots are edible

Thanks all! So I should have put my post in 'edibles' then! Where on earth did it come from? Do they just turn up willy-nilly?

Someone nearby will have grown some last year and let one go top seed. I did about three years ago and they are still growing in odd corners of the 12 acre site...

I bought a packet of mixed meadow seeds last year and there were some of those in it.
A lot of the flowers were very also pretty and I kept a lot of the seed heads for planting this year.
I put them some where safe and guess what?

Now i can see it.....it's the same plant I was admiring on my neighbour's plot about 2 hours ago though her's is purple. I said I would try and find out what it is for her....being a Botanist i felt i should offer. It is a beautiful plant particularly the flower buds. To narrow it down it is in the Asteraceae family (ex Compositae).

Thanks everyone! :)
I'm glad I asked and decided to keep it! The flowers are really pretty and the seeds heads are attractive too. Looks like I shall have more around next year!
PurpleHeather - there are lots more flowers still to open; if you want some seed, please pm me with your address! :)
