Possible PSB problem
« on: June 16, 2008, 11:27:07 »
Hi All,

I planted a few PSB plants a few months back and whilst some are just growing one has a few purple sprouts and also flowers. Is that normal for now? I think the plant packet said they would be ready next year but i could be wrong.

Also some of the leaves are looking a bit 'off' - rusty colour.

Can anyone advise if this is safe?

Pics below.

Keep getting worried that the stuff I grow will taste nasty - or turn out poisonous!

Oh, dear!! No simple answer.

First, what variety? Some mature in the late Summer, others February-April. Whichever, it's wrong!!

I've had several things - Kale, Calabrese - do this this year. I would re-sow - or buy in plants to suit.

For instance, you can plant in May for a July pick, & September for the Spring.

chop the flowers off, eat them in a stir fry if you like, the plant may produce more  ;D
don't know about the leaves

Thanks,

I have no idea what variety they are - that box was in the bin ages ago!

there is only one plant doing it so hopefully the others will grow 'properly'.

If they are still edible though i will just cook them up - sprouts and flowers.

I would have thought that they were a bit passé for eating?

I am glad to see some one else has the same.

I thought my winter broccoli had gone mad because one has a little purple sprout in the middle of it.

I use the same seed every year and usually get nothing until march at the earliest.

Once they start flowering they're not worth eating. Either take them off and hope the plant produces more, or compost it.

My ONE which has decided to produce early is looking fine in every way I sowed the whole packet and gave loads of the plants away, went round the other plots checking those other people have planted and no one else has a rogue plant.

I haven't tried doing photos yet so am not set up to put one on, but mine is the 'first rosette' right in the centre. It looks just the same as it should if it had come up next spring.

Maybe this is just one of those 'changes' that happens from time to time and how we get 'new plants'.

I,v only just planted my late PSB out and the early has only been out a couple of weeks! I never sow the seed till I take down last years plants as I figure thats the way nature would do it if it was seeding itself

You certainly have a point there.

In this situation. I actually planted in accordance with the instructions on the seed packet. Out of 50+ plants (most shared with others) One has performed in a manner out of the ordinary. The rest are growing, as they usually do, biding their time.
