Pruning ceanothus.

I have a beautiful but rather strange shaped ceanothus. It has just finished flowering and I was thinking of trying to cut it to a better shape. How brutal can I be?

Do you know wich one you have got Caroline? There seem to be different methods for each variety according to my book of words.
