Topic: scented shrubs

I have a small front garden and am fed up with the look of it, it was planted with evergreen shrubs but although I have carefully trimmed them to a ball shape, those balls have kept growing and everything is now just too big so I thought that I would scrap it altogether and refill with new shrubs.

This time I want to plant ONLY sweet smelling varieties which are also evergreen because I do not like bare twigs in winter.

I want people to walk past and smell the scent  which I also hope will waft into the house when the windows are open.

Any ideas?

I'd make room for at least one Witch Hazel...  know they aren't evergreen but the flowers and scent are very welcome at the start of the year  :)

Sarcococca confusa - Sweet Box, evergreen, flowers from December
rosemary, lavender, sage - for the smell of the leaves
an evergreen scented viburnum? Viburnum burkwoodii maybe?

Some of the scented evergreens in my garden:
Osmanthus Burkwoodii, Myrtle, Eucalyptus, Pittosporum tenuifolium, Pittosporum tobira, Abelia grandiflora (semi-evergreen), Euphorbia mellifera, Feijoa sellowiana, Poncirus trifoliata - and Elaeagnus ebbingei which I haven't got... yet.

We have a daphne retusa which is dwarf-growing, evergreen and the flowers have the most wonderful scent.  It has red berries in the Autumn which the blackbirds love.

Thanks for those suggestions. I will investigate their availability locally.

 
I have the rosemary, lavender sage, thyme etc in the herb boarder, they are nice when you knock them as you walk past aren't they?

I was thinking more about the fragrant flowers, hoping to get shrubs which will flower at different times so that  there is a nice smell just about every month of the year.

Most of the ones I listed provide that:
Osmanthus Burkwoodii, spring, sweetly fragrant
Poncirus trifoliata April-May, orange blossom
Pittosporum tobira, May to early July, orange blossom
Pittosporum tenuifolium, May and June, honey
Euphorbia mellifera, May and June, honey
Abelia grandiflora (semi-evergreen), June to October, lightly fragrant
Myrtle, July to August, sweetly spicy
Elaeagnus ebbingei, autumn, intensely fragrant

Feijoa sellowiana, from May to July, flowers not scented but edible!
Eucalyptus, scented foliage

With these and the Sarcococca and a couple of Viburnums, you'll be whiffing away all year round.
