Lemon grass tip
« on: May 26, 2008, 14:47:43 »
For anyone that likes lemon grass and struggles with growing from seed here is a quick cheat.

When they are on sale in the shops look carefully at the bottom end to see if it still has the thick basal stump. These will root like any softwood cutting. I found 2 in a pack at Tescos price reduced to 10p.

Nice one! I've got five of Sainsbury's finest, all doing well.

I just went through the packs to find the ones that had the greenest (or least brown?) stems.

Green dosn't matter, it must have a solid base and not be just rolled up tubes of leaves. With a bit of warmth they root quickly and make robust roots.

I bought a packet of seeds from Chilterns and it said they were generous with the seed because of difficult germination - I believed them and sowed the lot and they all germinated in a matter of days  :o do I really want all the lemon grass, ho hum

I just plonked mine in some water.

(I knew there was an upside to being a plonker).

Whenever I've sown them, they have all germinated within a day or so.
