Topic: Another melon question...

Hi all

first year growing melons (Minnesota Midget) and am V excited  ;D

Would it be ok to train them over the outside of the conservatory if I support the fruit, or would it risk heat/sun damage to plant  ???

Any thoughts much appreciated

I am trying a Blacktail Mountain Watermelon this year. I have a nice sheltered sunny spot all set up for it and it will have its own 4 ft wide, 2.5 ft high and 9 ft long poly tunnel. I do hope it appreciates the effort that is being made for it and reciprocates by delivering the goods.

Our climate is not ideal for melon growing. I like to try them though. Have two species on the go. Just for fun.

It is hard to say because we get a different summer every year. Melon growing countries seem to have a constant, hot and sunny season.

Take care with the watering they can actually burst if over watered.

I think they would be ok so long has you support the fruit. I grew mm 2 years ago they were growing lovely outside until snails attacked the fruit, ruined the lot. I've just one mm this year and a Sugarbaby watermelon which i'm going to grow in the greenhouse.

thanks for the advice - I'll give them a go over the conservatory then, but make sure I support them and don't overwater- fingers crossed  ;D

I think you'll be ok training them up the conservatory, I grew minessota midget as well as Blacktail Watermelon two years ago (think I got them from real seeds) and just grew them outside (in London) - they both did really well. I think the success depends mostly on how much sun we get this summer...
