Plastic labels
« on: May 17, 2008, 08:36:44 »
I ran out of plant labels the other day and I thought I would try to scrub off some of the writng on some old used ones that were knocking about. No amount of scrubbing would remove the permanenet writing so I thought I would soak them in a bleach solution. Hey presto in a couple of hours I have a load of new labels. Guess who will be going around picking up old labels now.
When I get old I don't want people thinking
"What a sweet little old lady"........
                             I want em saying
"Oh Crap! Whats she up to now ?"

Shirl, please, please tell me what you use as a marker pen!!!! Whatever I try simply comes off after a while, supposed  to be permanent. Really frustrating as I have sown and bought lots of different plants this year (non edible) and I need to know whats what ??? I do have a labelling machine that daughter bought me but haven't been able to get a refill tape locally.

I used to use a cd/dvd marker pen on plastic, but it does tend to fade after a few months.
The fading is worse on semi transparent plastic, as the light comes from both sides.

Now I use chip forks as labels, and write on them with biro.
It does run a bit after watering, but is still very legible.
I bought a 1000 of them, as I don't eat enough chips to accumulate enough.

I've got a "china pencil" don't know where it came from, but it works a treat.
I cut up margerine tubs to make very useful plant labels.
 Me, skinflint??? nah!!!

By the way "Astonish" from Kleeneeze works very well at getting the writing off.

The best thing I've come across is a piece of fine sandpaper. Use the finest you can get, and it leaves a really good surface for writing on.

dtw, i am sure the idea is to grab a handful of these from your local chippie, not one for each portion. Good idea for using these though, where did you get it from?
Don't worry about tomorrow, or yesterday, just think about today.

Lorna I got them from Wilkies they are STAEDTLER. lumocolor and are permanent. ai think they are for CD's. The writing won't come off wilkies labels anyway. The pencils that come with the labels wears off quite quickly.

No matter what permanent marker I use...the writing will always fade away ...

you must be using different pencils to me then cos mine always fade. Probably it's because I have to keep getting the labels out of the pots to see what the hell they are.Hence the writing gets rubbed off, Comes with seniority ya know
