Lilypad fertilizer tablets??
« on: June 11, 2008, 01:59:11 »
I've never used them because I was afraid the extra nitrogen might cause more algae.
But the Lily pads could stand to be larger and would give more coverage from sun.
So I dither around ::)
Any recommendations?

I use them and wouldn't be worried. They are coated with something which releases the fertilizer slowly, in small amounts and is also temperature dependent (high T - faster lily growth and nutrient requirement - more fertilizer release). So it will not produce a dramatic and large algae bloom. The lilies should mop up the fertilizer.

Will give it a try then. Thank you for the info.
We've got lots of string algae now which the barley straw cannot deter but it is supposed to be good for the compost pile- a purpose for everything.

I wonder if string algae is the same as blanket weed here? If anyone has lots of it, it can can dried out flat and used (when there's enough) to line hanging baskets with........a tip from radio 4's Gardeners Question Time today :D
I was born with nothing and have most of it left.

Some google posts seem to agree they're one and the same- long sheets of waving green. We could probably line 12 baskets with our crop.
