guess how many slugs
« on: May 05, 2008, 18:29:41 »
went down to the plot last night about 11pm armed with torch and killer instinct and guess how many slugs and snails  i killed in 45 mins. 266 of the blighters. couldnt believe it 266. also found out that slugs are cannibals. after killing first lot of slugs i went back to see if there where any more and low and behold there were other slugs feeding on the dead ones. somebody out there needs to breed a slug that is harmless to plants but goes round killing other slugs
takes over your life doesn't it

They do exist, though I'm not sure whether they're entirely carnivorous.

I'm fed up with slugs and snails too. Had some lovely cauliflowers coming up and the tops taken straight off and some savoy. Feel like you never win. Grass knee high weeds everywhere and then slugs.

That was alot of slugs you found they would eat a whole plot over night.

Tis Vineweevil that is driving me mad.
Good job I've got a hubby who doesn't mind squishing them all.
Everything is being "done" with the killer stuff tomorrow.
Friendship isn't a big thing.
Its a million little things.

I always save lots of time just chopping a couple of dozen or so in half for the other slugs to eat, they get full on their friends and leave your crops alone. I put bran down as well, they gorge on that and sometimes pop :D

Robert, I think the carnivorous slug is the Leopard slug, its markings are very pretty. It hunts down and eats slugs, Im not sure though if its slightly omnivorous ???
I was born with nothing and have most of it left.

I have only had five slugs caught in my patch all month, snails on the other hand number in their thousands. Don't know what makes the difference.

It's odd isn't it?  My home and allotment are about a quarter mile apart.  At home we have a huge snail population but never seen a slug and vice versa at the allotment.
