Fencing around Allotments - Funding/Grants?
« on: April 21, 2008, 19:10:57 »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone here can offer advice / experience on getting funding or grants to fence off an allotment?  Our allotments are not very big, there are about 10 / 11 plots at the moment with room for more if required.  The plots in the next village have a HUGE waiting list but the people waiting won't come to our allotments because they are so open and the kids go in there.  Funnily enough we have a gate with a lock (that doesn't work!) but no fencing!!  A few years ago fencing was donated but the council couldn't afford to install it (apparently!!) so it was left to rot in the brambles (we found it last summer).  With the local elections coming up we have raised it with both candidates and the one tonight said the council won't fund it but there are grants available and he would investigate.  I'd like to do the same thing but have no idea who to approach.  We had carrots stolen last year and another guy had things stolen and tossed around by kids.  Now some of the brambles have been cut down it is even more open and the kids have made a bike track right next to us.  We really need it fenced off and secure and I'm sure more people would then get involved.

Any advice appreciated.  :)

Hi,

May be worth having a look at the Allotments Regeneration Initiative Website - http://www.farmgarden.org.uk/ari/

Also may be worth applying to the Lottery through Awards For All Which is a Lottery grants scheme for local communities - http://www.awardsforall.org.uk/

There used to be some funding called Allotments Regeneration Initiative (try googling it)  of you could try Awards for All (Lottery).  Some local authorities have small grant spots but sounds like you may not get anything there.  have you a local Groundwork or BCTV who could help?

We got all sorts from local businesses:

A builder laid a flagged path and provided paving.
Another did some fencing
Garden companies cut overgrown trees.
£250 Lottery Grant

We then put a piece in the local paper thanking and listing all those who had helped.
